He said the drug courier, Emmanuel Ogbonna, who was arrested in a hotel on the outskirts of Aba, where he lodged, is linked to Aba’s newest drug spot – the Black Kingdom. Akingbade said the drug courier was able to evade arrest on his way from Benin to Aba due to a police emblem on the windscreen of his car and a police uniform inside. He said the drug was meant to be delivered at Ariaria International Market, a place he described as the “Black Kingdom.”
The NDLEA boss said that when his men accosted him, the baron used the central lock of his car to shut them off, making his arrest difficult but when they over-powered him, he started shouting to make it look as if he was being kidnapped, but when the crowd learnt he was trying to resist arrest, they helped the NDLEA personnel.
In his confession, Emmanuel, who said he was sent on errand with the bags of hemp, said he could not remember the name of the person who sent him with the parcels to Aba. He said it was his first time in getting involved in such an errand, adding that he used the police emblem and the uniform to deceive security agents on the highway into believing he was a security agent.
Parading the suspect, Akingbade said it was the biggest haul the agency made at Aba.
