The British Government has granted scholarship to 45 Nigerians to
study strategic postgraduate courses in different universities in the
United Kingdom for one year.
The successful Nigerians, who were picked for the all-expenses-paid
programme under the British Chevening Scholarship, were treated to a
pre-departure reception by the Acting British High Commissioner to
Nigeria, Mr. Simon Shercliff in Abuja.
The 45 lucky Nigerians are among the 1500 scholars sponsored globally
by the British Government to secure Masters Degrees in their chosen
fields in London universities.
Speaking with the departing scholars in Abuja, Shercliff explained
that the goal of the British Government in undertaking the scheme was to
help train Nigerians to become outstanding leaders in their chose field
to play crucial roles in the world.
“What we are doing is a commitment to help Nigeria to train its
future leaders and to make them to play crucial roles as world leaders,”
the acting High Commissioner, said.
The acting high commissioner announced that Britain was ready to put
in more money in training more Nigerians under the Chevening
Scholarship, saying that the number of those selected for the programme
this year had increased from 13 in 2014.
Shercliff however pleaded with the awardees to return and serve
Nigerian at the end of their studies in Britain so as to fulfil the
objective of the programme.
