Buhari’s Anti-Corruption Drive Unsettles - PDP

•President Buhari
•Party warns against witch-hunting
THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appears to be uncomfortable with President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to recover public funds allegedly stolen by government officials in the last administration.
Apparently worried by the decision, the PDP has expressed fears that the exercise might become a witch-hunt aimed at discrediting and undermining the opposition.
A statement yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, cautioned the President against politicising corruption.

A study conducted by Prof. Olumide Tewe, a nutritional toxicologist at the University of Ibadan, alongside some of his colleagues, has revealed that imported frozen chicken and turkey contain certain chemical substances that are harmful to human health.
Speaking at a press briefing organised by the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control, a nutritional enzymologist, Dr. Okhiomah Abu, who is one of the researchers, said that poultry products imported into Nigeria contained toxic and heavy metals that could worsen the occurrence of food-borne diseases in the country.

Graduate needs N5m for Spinal Cord Surgery

spinal cord patient
Thirty-four-year-old graduate, Mr. Babatope Oguntoyinbo, has called on Nigerians to support him to seek medical treatment in India.
Oguntoyinbo is down with a spinal cord injury that medics say could render his cognitive functions ineffective if he does not undergo an urgent surgical operation in the Asian country.
According to his medical report, Oguntoyinbo has Case 2 level lumbar disc disease and the condition has led to his inability to control his bowel and bladder.
The disease, our correspondent gathered, also caused damage to his lumbar and spine.
Mrs. Funke Olanipekun, who spoke on behalf of her ailing brother, said his health had so degenerated that he no longer walks or eases his bowel without assistance.
Before the disease hit him, Olanipekun said her brother worked with a security firm in Lagos.
She added, “Initially, he complained about knee pain in November and of course, he went to the hospital for treatment. Though the pain occasionally resurfaced, it did not stop him from going to work at his office in Ajah till it got worse this February. Now, he is helpless because he cannot urinate or eat without assistance and support.”
Olanipekun urged Nigerians and corporate organisations to support the cost of his treatment in an Indian hospital.

FG To Borrow N240bn In Third Quarter

debt

The Federal Government is planning to borrow between N180bn and N240bn through the sale of government bonds in the third quarter, the Debt Management Office has said.
According to the DMO, the amount will be borrowed through the issuance of five and 20-year bonds
The debt office had raised N210.22bn ($1.1bn) through government bond sales in the second quarter.
The debt management office is planning to sell the 15.54 per cent 2020 bond at auctions in July, August and September with N35bn to N45bn on offer each month.
It said it would also offer the 12.1493 per cent 2034 bond in July, August and September with N25 to N35bn on offer each month.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government sovereign bond yields rose by more than 10 basis point along the curve on Monday as domestic investors worried about the impact of a weaker currency on inflation and a possible rise in government borrowing, Reuters reported quoting traders.
The most liquid five-year bond yield climbed 12 basis points to 14.71 per cent on Monday, while the 10-year benchmark yield climbed 10 basis points.
Investors had hoped for a rally after the smooth elections in March ended uncertainties about political risk in the economy.
But worries over the government’s finances and the continued slide in the currency have spooked investors.
The Central Bank of Nigeria is also planning to borrow about N872.96bn ($4.4b) in new Treasury bills issues between June 18 and September 3.
Data released by the central bank had shown that it would auction N215.12bn worth of the three-month paper, N238.5bn in the six-month debt and N419.34bn worth in the one-year paper.
The total debt proposed for the third quarter is 12.3 per cent short of the N995.5bn raised in the second quarter of the year.
The CBN as to issue treasury bills worth N730.499bn in the second quarter of 2015.
Treasury bills are short-term debt obligation with a maturity of less than one year issued by the CBN through a competitive bidding process bi-monthly.

Naira Drops To 226.5 On New Forex Rules

Naira and dollar notes
Naira and Dollar notes
The naira fell to 226.5 on Monday against the United States dollar at the parallel market.
The development mean the local currency has lost about 2.8 per cent of its value against the dollar since Wednesday when the CBN introduced a new rule to the foreign exchange market.
The naira was sold for 220 to the greenback before the new forex rule was announced last week.
The CBN, as part of measures to conserve the dwindling reserves, barred importers of 41 items including rice, textiles, poultry products and private aircraft from buying hard currencies at the interbank forex market.
Traders said the dollar might be sold for 230 this week if the trend continued.
Trading on the interbank market, which is pegged around the central bank’s rate of 196.90 naira, was at 198.90 naira on Monday.
The naira had dropped against the dollar from 222 to 225 on Thursday, barely 36 hours after the CBN imposed the new forex rule.
The regulator had said the new rule would help preserve the external reserves, facilitate the resuscitation of domestic industries and generate employment opportunities.
But the ban, which economists said would see about $5.7bn quarterly forex demand by importers of the items move from the official to the parallel market, had continued to fuel artificial scarcity of dollar at the black market and the Bureau De Change segment of the forex market.
The Acting President, Association of Bureau De Change Operators, Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, had said.
the hoarding of forex followed the CBN’s new policy banning importers of 40 items from the forex market.

Aso Rock Conducts Audit Of Security Personnel

Aso Villa
Aso Villa
Authorities of the Presidential Villa, Abuja have ordered a comprehensive audit of security personnel and forces deployed in the seat of power.
The audit may have been necessitated by the ongoing inter-agency rivalry in the Villa.
According to a memo signed by the Aide-De-Camp to the President, Lt. Col. Lawal Abubakar, the exercise was needed for “accountability and deployment.”
The memo dated June 25, 2015 was titled, “Request for strength returns of security personnel and forces deployed within the Presidential Villa, Abuja.”
Abubakar requested that the required information should be forwarded to his office latest by Monday (yesterday).
The memo read, “The need for proper accountability by all security forces and personnel deployed within the Presidential Villa cannot be over-emphasised.
“This has made it imperative to collate an updated nominal roll for all security forces and personnel deployed within the Presidential Villa performing physical security duties for proper accountability and deployment.
“Based on this, and in the spirit of enhancing general security within the Presidential Villa, you are requested to submit a comprehensive nominal roll of security personnel and security forces in your department and offices to office of the ADC for further necessary action.”
Meanwhile, officials of the Department of State Services who were removed from their beats and locations inside the Presidential Villa have yet to return to their duty posts on Monday.
That was despite an order by the Chief Security Officer to the President, Mr. Abdulrahman Mani, that they should disregard a directive by the ADC removing them from spots where they could perform “close protection roles” for the President.

How We Killed Ex- FUTA VC - Suspects

Akure (2)
The suspected killers of the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof. Albert Ilemobade, yesterday narrated how they strangled him to death.
The suspects, who were his domestic workers Daniel Ita (guard) from Cross River State and his sacked driver, Olayemi Bamitale from Ekiti State, as well as the late Ilemobade’s red Toyota Rav 4, were paraded by the police in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
The duo were arrested by the police in Ogun State before they were transferred to Ondo State.
Family members, members of the Archbishop Vining College of Theology, Akure, where the deceased was a member and representatives of Imade College, Owo Old Students Association, led by Yinka Akinola, besieged the police headquarters yesterday.
They were there to catch a glimpse of the two suspects, who killed the 78-year-old man.
Last Monday, it was reported that the don was abducted by unknown gunmen. His decomposing remains were discovered at an isolated store in his house on Sunday.
Bamitale (36) was said to have been sacked in April when he allegedly stole the deceased’s Toyota RAV4.  It was gathered that the vehicle was with him for four days before he returned it, when he could not get a buyer.
Bamitale was said to have been detained by the police before sympathisers appealed to the deceased to allow his bail.

Ikorodu Robbery Strengthen Waterways Security, Says Assembly

Lagos-House

LAGOS State House of Assembly has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the Nigerian Navy and other relevant agencies to provide adequate security on waterways in the metropolis following last week’s Ikorodu bank robbery.
Moving a motion on the incident that occurred at Ipakodo, Ikorodu, where two banks were robbed by bandits, who escaped through the waterways, Majority Leader, Sanai Agunbiade also urged Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to strengthen the Waterways Guard Corps.
He said the corps should be supported to discharge its functions as enshrined in the Lagos State Waterways Agency Law 2008, adding that the two helicopters bought for LASWA should be utilised.
Agunbiade, urged all commercial banks and structures near jetties  to strengthen their security by installing high density cameras on their premises.

Okonjo-Iweala Spent $2.1bn Without FG Aproval

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

The National Economic Council, chaired by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, on Monday accused a former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy under ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, of spending $2.1bn from the Excess Crude Account without authorisation.
“We looked at the numbers for the Excess Crude Account. The last time the former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mrs Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, reported to the council, and it is in the minutes, she reported by November 2014 that we had $4.1 bn.
“Today, the Accountant-General Office reported we have $2.0bn. Which means the honourable minister spent $2.1bn without authority of the NEC and that money was not distributed to states, it was not paid to the three tiers of government,” Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole told State House correspondents after the NEC’s 58th meeting in Abuja.
The ‘unauthorised’ spending, according to the economic council, is among the several anomalies discovered in the management of the nation’s economy between 2012 and May 2015.
Within the period, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation was said to have earned a total of N8.1 tn but remitted only N4.3tn.
Consequently, the Federal Government has constituted Oshiomhole, Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai; Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel; and Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo, into a panel to probe the NNPC and the ECA between 2012 and May, 2015.
Oshiomhole, el-Rufai, Emmanuel and the Zamfara State Governor, Abdulazeez Yari, jointly briefed journalists at the end of the meeting.

Police Arraign Manager For Stealing N2m Beverages

Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court
Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court
The police have arraigned a warehouse manager, Akokhia Joseph, before an Ebute-Meta Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing beverages estimated at N2.2m, belonging to his employer, one Vivian Osian.
It was learnt that Akokhia was to give the goods out based on orders from the management of the company.
He allegedly diverted some of the goods, replacing them in the warehouse with empty cartons.
He was said to have also allegedly deleted stock data from the computers to cover up the crime.
It was learnt that several times, goods had been discovered missing in the warehouse, but Akokhia usually returned the monetary value of the goods, claiming that he later found and sold them.
Our correspondent learnt that after his employer noticed some inconsistencies in the computer data and the missing warehouse goods, an auditor was invited to analyse the records, leading to the discovery of the theft.
The 24-year-old was arraigned on Monday on one count of stealing.

‘NNPC, CBN, Customs, NPA Must Remit Incomes Into Federation Account’ - Buhari

•Buhari
President Muhamadu Buhari has directed all revenue generating agencies of the government to remit all incomes into the Federation Account –  in line with the constitutional requirement.
He spoke yesterday against the practice during former President Goodluck Jonathan administration when some of the agencies held back some of the generated income.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) yesterday, Buhari said: “All Revenue Generating Agencies, such as Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Nigeria Customs Services (NCS), Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS), Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), among others, shall comply with stipulated Financial Regulations and Administrative Instructions in their remittances into the Consolidated Revenue Fund.”
He promised that the Federal Government will ensure more accountability, transparency and integrity in the distribution of the Federation Account as it will abide by the provisions of Sections 80 and 162 of the Constitution.
The President advised governors to seek efficient ways to pay workers’ salaries in their states.
Many of the state governments, hit by a cash crunch, are owing workers.

Duno - Let's Talk Lyric Video

Displaying LETS-TALK-FINAL2.jpg
Where did conscious music go? You know, music that made at least a little bit of sense and not entirely dependent on groovy beats, repetitive catch-phrases with no meaning and raunchy, risqué videos?

It would appear that many have forgotten that music is an art form and not an excuse for lewd exposure. Unfortunately, that's the reality today. Our pop culture has declined from the talent of the art of creativity, cadence and delivery to the ass-shaking, bling-bling and Champagne-popping culture.

Fortunately, the total descent from art to trash has been stunted by barriers of dogged nonconformists who believe in the sanctity of the art; listeners and makers of music alike.

Duno, who rent the airwaves last year and confirmed his status as the hip-hop reverend after he bagged a South-South Music Award (SSMA) with his hit single "Look" releases another song which as always, is food for thought.

In "Let's Talk", Duno remains true to his very nonconformist nature lacing sagely tongue-twisting flows above a fast-paced afrobeat baseline, repping hiphop and the City to the fullest.

The song which is produced by Michael Excel, comes with a promotional lyric video. However, the main video will be released subsequently.

Buhari May Not Name Ministers Until Sept

President Muhammadu Buhari
FOR those that are eager to hear President Muhammadu Buhari name his cabinet members, they will have to tarry awhile because the President’s cabinet members may not be announced untill the end of August or early September.
A source very close to the President confided in The PUNCH on Sunday that Buhari would not form any cabinet until the “rot left behind by the past administration” is cleared.
“Mr. President is reluctant to build on a rotten foundation he inherited from the Peoples Democratic Party administration. You cannot even begin to imagine the situation we have met on the ground; almost everything is in a state of decay.
“There is absolutely no way the new government can hope to achieve anything long-lasting without first building a new foundation,” the source said.
