Kano state government is to establish a mechanic village to accommodate automobiles repairs, spare parts fabricated.
Already, the state Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Peougeot Automobile of Nigeria (PAN) for the training of hundred mechanics where youths would be trained on mechatronics, panel beating, welding and essentials of mechanical/electrical engineering, among other things.Governor Abdullahi Umar Gandje who disclosed this during the send forth of beneficiaries and presentation of cash assistance to 18 local football clubs in the state explained that the move is part ofcommitment to build capacities of the youth for self reliance and as well galvanize them to drive socio – economic development.
Ganduje said “because of our high population, we have a large number of vehicles, yet a small number of mechanics, and besides, in this day and age, vehicles repairs are above road side mechanics, because of the sophistication of vehicles. ”
He stressed “we must, therefore, train our youth to fill in the gap in this direction”.
The Governor said mechanics in Kano must transit from trial and error approach to vehicle repairs to professionalism in the fast changing society, which is characterized by developments in ICT and engineering.
Governor Ganduje therefore, charged the youths benefitting from the automobile course to remain dedicated, pointing out that on completion of the training, they will be issued with City and Guilds certificates and be given driving licenses by the government.
In her remarks, the Director – General, PAN Learning Center, Kaduna, Mrs. Elizabeth O. Mordi promised that besides the training on automobile repairs, maintenance and allied areas, the trainees would also undergo free ICT and defensive driving courses.
Representative of the Emir of Kano, Mohammad Sanusi II, Alhaji Ado Kurawa, Dangoribar Kano, commended the state government for initiating and sponsoring the programme, as part of its responsibility for youths empowerment in the state.
