Kano Govt goes into sugar cane waste processing
Dr, abdullahi ganduje

Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has expressed the willingness of his government to explore the possibility of providing machines that would process sugarcane bagasse (wastages) into animal feeds. Bagasse is the fibrous residue after sugarcane is crushed to extract its juice. Experts say it can be utilized as substrate for bio-refinery processes.
This particular waste is very rich in carbohydrates so it has also been reported as a feed material for fermentation. It also has potential bioremediation purposes. Ganduje made the disclosure while inspecting ongoing Seven-Day Operation Keep Kano Clean at Kano Sugarcane Market on Kabuga- Kofar Ruwa road in Gwale Local Government area on Tuesday, adding that if the project becomes a reality, many unemployed youth would be engaged. The governor advised the market leadership to think proactively on how to improve their businesses, assuring that the incumbent government is ready to come in and assist them to progress. He, therefore, urged traders in the market and residents within the vicinity to ensure cleanliness of their immediate environment and households, as well as to ensure stringent personal hygiene, stressing that clean environment is free from killer diseases and would make society healthier. Earlier, the chairman of Gwale Local Government council, Abdullahi Zubairu Imam appealed to the state government to install machines at the market that would be used to process the sugar cane wastages in view of its economic potential. Meanwhile, the Governor has promised inhabitants of Tsamiyar Gogau, Gobirawa Ward, Dala local government area that his administration would convert a refuse dump site in the community into a secondary school. He made the pledge during an inspection visit to the area for monitoring the ongoing Seven-Day Operation Keep Kano Clean, directing chairman of Dala local government council to provide an alternative refuse dumping place for the government to purchase as replacement for the old one. Dr. Ganduje appealed to people especially the youth to embrace the clean up exercise.
