SPEAKER of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, yesterday painted a gloomy picture of the nation’s economy, saying the economy was in great danger.
The speaker, who decried the bad state of the economy when a delegation of Bauchi State People led by the Deputy Governor, Nuhu Gidado, visited him to congratulate him on his emergence, said what it required was for him and other leaders to dig into their inner resources of energy to confront the problem.
He said: “We are coming into power at a time when there is problem with our economy. So, we have to do everything in our power to confront the problem.”
He also said that the North-East geopolitical zone has remained the most devastated zone in the country and needed the coming together of its leaders in pursuit of peace for its development.
Dogara told the delegation comprising government officials, traditional rulers, the academia and federal lawmakers that he was planning to meet all his colleagues in the Green Chamber to plan for international donor conference for the development of the region, adding: “By God’s grace, we shall see the development of the region.”
Although he said that he was sorry the way and manner his election took place, he said that he was thankful to God and Nigerians who stood by him for the position to come to Bauchi State.
He commended his kinsmen for the solidarity and told them: “If I have integrity today, if I have honour today, if I have character today, I did not pick it on the street, I learned it in Bauchi.By your collective leadership, you have produced a leader from Bauchi State.”
Speaking earlier, the Deputy Governor of Bauchi State, Nuhu Gidado, who said they were mandated by the state government to pay the courtesy visit, described Dogara as a dogged and worthy son of the state who has made them proud.
He expressed optimism that the speaker would deliver the dividend of democracy not only to Nigerians but also to the people of Bauchi State.
