The National Bureau of Statistics on Sunday stated that 3,710,618 passengers traveled through the nation’s airports in the opening quarter of this year.
The bureau, in a report on the sector, which was made available to our correspondent, stated that the figure represented a decline of 453,144 passengers or 10.88 per cent from the 4,163,762 recorded in the fourth quarter of last year.
The NBS said the data used in the report were obtained from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.
The decline in passenger traffic in the first quarter, the report noted, was driven by lower number of people travelling by air to destinations within the country during the period.
The report stated, “A total of 3,710,618 passengers travelled through Nigeria’s airports in the opening quarter of 2015, representing a decline of 453,144 passengers or 10.88 per cent from the preceding quarter.
“Declines in total passengers in the first quarter were driven by lower numbers of domestically travelling passengers, at 708,092 fewer passengers or 23.84 per cent below Q4 of 2014 values, whilst international passengers increased by 254,948 passengers or 21.35 per cent.
“Similarly, the quarterly rise observed in Q4 of 2014 was also driven solely by higher domestic passenger numbers, increasing by 320,544 or 12.10 per cent relative to the preceding quarter, whilst internationally bound travellers declined by 92,800 or 7.21 per cent.”
The report added that out of the total number of air passengers who travelled in the first quarter of this year, 2,261,648 or 60.95 per cent commuted to domestic destinations, while 71.32 per cent of travels in the preceding quarter were domestic.
It stated that 65.90 per cent and 68.84 per cent were recorded for domestic travels in the fourth quarter of 2014 and the first quarter of this year, respectively.
