NSE Market Capitalization Drops N88bn Amid Sell Pressure

Activities at the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) on Monday opened for the week on a negative trend with the value of equities dropping by N88 billion due to sell pressure.

A breakdown of the transactions showed that ýLafarge Wapco led the gainers’ table, increasing by N4.10 to close at N93.50 per share. It was trailed by Mobil Oil with a gain of N2.95 to close at N155, while Cadbury Nigeria appreciated by N2 to close at N42 per share. Nigerian Breweries advanced by N1 to close at N152, while GT Bank grew by 52k to close at N28.63 per share.
Market capitalization of listed equities lost N88 billion or 0.74 per cent to close at N11.663 trillion against N11.751 trillion recorded on Friday. Also, the NSE All Share Index shed 168.00 points to close at 34,317.72 points compared with 34,485 .72 points recorded on Friday.

On the contrary, ýSeplat topped the losers’ chart, dropping by N19.90 to close at N378.10 per share. Nestle came second with a loss of N15.50 to close at N915, while Guinness lost N7.96 to close at N160.04 per share. Total Nigeria and PZ Industries dropped by N6.95 and N1.38 each to close at N155.50 and N29.88 per share respectively.
A review of the transactions showed that investors traded 200.966 million shares worth N2.19 billion transacted in 4,151 deals against 429.103 million shares valued N4.15 billion exchanged in 4,691 deals on Friday.
The Financial Service sector drove the volume of shares traded, accounting for 138.12 million shares worth N1.09 million achieved in 2,323 deals. The banking sub-sector was the most active in the sector with a total of 94.79 million shares valued N887.68 million in 1,458 deals. UBA was investors’ delight, accounting for 54.77 million shares worth N279.66 exchanged in 474 deals. It was followed by Zenith Bank having sold 11.60 million shares valued N255.08 million in 201 deals.
The Conglomerates Sector followed with a total of 30.39 million shares worth N123.81 million in 274 deals.
Transcorp was most sought in the sector with a turnover of 29.68 million shares valued N95.46 million traded in 221 deals.
